Robert Hawkins, born in Sullivan, Indiana in 1919, began his journey at Indiana State University in 1937. Upon completing his studies, he took on the role of Director of the Indiana State Marching Band, a position he held until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. His service ended in 1945 with an honorable discharge, after which he returned from Okinawa. In 1947, Hawkins earned a Master of Music degree from Indiana State. He then pursued further graduate studies at Columbia University in New York, culminating in a PhD in 1951. Following this, he accepted a position at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado, where he served as Professor of Music and Director of Bands. During his sixteen-year tenure at Western State College, Hawkins was appointed Chairman of the Music Department and Director of the Gunnison Music Camp.
