American Junior Shorthorn Association Scholarships

Introduction
Each year The Shorthorn Foundation offers a number of college scholarships specifically for members of the American Junior Shorthorn Association (AJSA). The American Shorthorn Association (ASA) together with the Foundation believe investing in the education of association youth is vital, since they represent the future of both the beef cattle industry and the Shorthorn breed.
Eligibility
AJSA members may submit applications for up to three of the six different college scholarships listed below.
Scholarships Available
Mike Dugdale Memorial Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,000
- Target recipient: Collegiate upperclassman
- Requirements: Active AJSA membership and a demonstrated commitment to improving the beef cattle industry after graduation.
John C. "Jack" Ragsdale Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,000
- Target recipient: High school senior or college freshman
- Requirements: Active AJSA member with a genuine interest in learning livestock evaluation and an appreciation for the purebred livestock sector.
Don Longley Memorial Scholarships:
- Amount: Three awards of $2,000 each annually
- Target recipients: High school seniors or college freshmen
- Requirements: Sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and selected based on Shorthorn involvement, academic record, financial need, and participation in other activities.
Lyle & Katharyn DeWitt Memorial Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,000 (one scholarship)
- Target recipients: High school seniors or college freshmen
- Requirements: Sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded considering Shorthorn involvement, grades, financial need, and participation in extracurricular activities.
Jared & Justin Bedwell Memorial Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,000 (one scholarship)
- Target recipients: High school seniors, college freshmen, or college sophomores
- Requirements: Sponsored by the Bedwell family in cooperation with The Shorthorn Foundation; selection is based on the applicant’s involvement, stated career goals and plans in agriculture, college GPA, and character references.
John Miller Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,500 (one scholarship)
- Target recipient: Collegiate upperclassman (including trade school students)
- Requirements: Active AJSA membership with special emphasis on candidates who show interest in increasing Shorthorn viability within the commercial cattle industry.
Lydia Lou O’Brien – Miller Farms Memorial Scholarship:
- Amount: $2,000 (one scholarship)
- Target recipients: High school seniors, college freshmen, or college sophomores
- Requirements: Current AJSA member; applicant must submit an essay explaining how caring for and working with Shorthorn cattle has influenced their life and agricultural plans. High school/college GPA will be considered.
Shorthorn Foundation Scholarship:
- Amount: $4,000 (one scholarship)
- Target recipients: College juniors, seniors, or graduate students
- Requirements: Applicants (current or former AJSA members, due to age) will be evaluated on how AJSA/Shorthorn involvement shaped their path and on their future agricultural career plans. College GPA will be taken into account.
White Fox Ranch Scholarship:
- Amount: Two awards of $5,000 each (one male and one female recipient)
- Target recipients: Current AJSA junior members who are high school seniors or undergraduate students pursuing degrees in agriculture or veterinary medicine
- Requirements: Applicants must show interest in serving rural communities and the cattle industry. Submission must include a two-part essay (750–1,000 words total), a resume, and a letter of recommendation. Preference may be given to those demonstrating strong leadership, service, and mentorship within the beef industry.
