Program overview
The Melvin Kruger Scholarship Program awards funds in three categories using one common application. The three categories are: Accredited University Scholarship, Accredited CTE Scholarship, and Diversity Scholarship. Summaries of each category and the specific eligibility and award rules follow.
General eligibility (applicants who are NRCA or Roofing Alliance members)
- Applicant must be a full-time or part-time employee of a roofing industry company, or the spouse or dependent child of such an employee. The employee must have at least one year of full-time or part-time service with their company by the application deadline.
- High school seniors or graduates who intend to enroll, or students already enrolled, in a full-time undergraduate program directly related to a roofing career at an accredited vocational/technical trade school or college for an entire academic year are eligible.
Accredited CTE Scholarship (purpose and eligibility)
- Purpose: To support students preparing for hands-on or trade careers in roofing, such as roof system and sheet metal installers/fabricators, crane and equipment operators, foremen/superintendents, warehouse and inventory specialists, and other roofing trade roles. This award is not intended for careers that require a four-year undergraduate degree.
- CTE/vocational eligibility: Applicants may be enrolled in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs or vocational schools regardless of industry affiliation. High school seniors or graduates planning to enroll, or students already enrolled, must be in a full-time program directly related to a roofing career at an accredited vocational or technical trade school for the full academic year.
Accredited University Scholarship (purpose and eligibility)
- Purpose: To assist students pursuing college-level studies related to roofing, building construction, or construction science.
- Eligible students are high school seniors or graduates who will enroll, or students already enrolled, in a full-time course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire academic year.
Diversity Scholarship (purpose and eligibility)
- Purpose: To broaden participation and promote diversity within the roofing and construction fields.
- Eligible applicants include African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and multi-racial students. All female students are eligible regardless of race or ethnicity. Applicants who bring diverse perspectives for other reasons (including those with physical, mental, or other disabilities) are also welcome to apply.
- The Diversity Scholarship is available to students pursuing construction science education at either an accredited post-secondary institution or an accredited vocational/technical trade school.
- Construction Management applicants: For those enrolled in undergraduate Construction Management programs (typically programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and often accredited by the American Council for Construction Education — http://www.acce-hq.org), the same undergraduate enrollment requirement applies.
