Overview
The Morton B. Duggan, Jr. Memorial Education Recognition Award, administered by the American Respiratory Care Foundation, honors a student enrolled in an accredited respiratory care education program. Applicants from any U.S. state are welcome, although preference is given to candidates who reside in Georgia or South Carolina. The Foundation may grant up to $1,000 in memory of Morton B. Duggan, Jr. The award package includes a certificate of recognition, coach airfare, one night’s lodging, and registration for AARC Congress.

Eligibility
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited respiratory care training program.
- Applicants may come from any state; Georgia and South Carolina candidates are preferred.

Award Components
- Monetary award: up to $1,000.
- Certificate of recognition.
- Coach airfare to AARC Congress.
- One night’s hotel lodging.
- AARC Congress registration.

Requirements (documents to submit)
1. Completed application form.
2. Official verification of enrollment in an accredited respiratory care program.
3. Official transcript showing a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, or an equivalent GPA.
4. An original, referenced paper on a respiratory care topic. The paper must have a cover page that displays only the paper’s title; no identifying information (name, address, school, etc.) may appear within the paper to avoid bias during review.
5. Two letters of recommendation:
- One from the program director or another senior faculty member.
- One from the medical director or a physician instructor.
Each letter must attest to: (a) approval of the applicant’s paper, (b) the candidate’s suitability for the award, and (c) the candidate’s potential for a career in respiratory care.

Application Instructions
- Applications are accepted beginning January 1 through the deadline of June 1. Incomplete applications or submissions missing supporting documentation will not be considered.
- Undergraduate applicants: attach the original referenced paper to the online application. The paper must follow the cover-page and anonymity requirements stated above. Refer to the Paper Submission Guidelines for details.
- Applicants for the William W. Burgin/Robert Lawrence award (if applicable): in addition to the basic personal information, attach a personal essay of at least 1,200 words explaining how the award will help you complete your degree and pursue leadership roles in health care. That essay must include a cover page with the author’s name, address, and phone number; the body of the essay must omit identifying information to prevent bias. Reapplication Policy
- Previous recipients of the undergraduate award may apply again.
- Previous postgraduate award recipients may apply and, if judged most deserving by the Board of Trustees or its designated selection committee, may receive awards in a second and third year provided they remain in good standing in their advanced degree program.
